A deck we built for an astronomer

Concealed fasteners are one of the greatest innovations of modern deck living. Composite planks feature edges designed to accept "clips" that bind the boards together and to the deck at the same time. Visually, this provides a surface free of nails or screws for a smooth and elegant appearance. Structurally, it prevents moisture and mildew from penetrating the core of the plank - allowing warranties of up to 50 years!
The leading cause of deck failure is moisture penetrating the wood framing that supports the deck surface. Adhesive butyl membranes with a 'self-sealing' core prevent framing from absorbing moisture trapped under the planks - greatly extending the life of the deck.
Due to numerous high profile failures, deck codes have changed significantly in recent years with a heavy emphasis on adding steel hardware to most connections. Railing regulations have also ramped up with spacing reduced to 4" and scrutiny on post attachments. Snow-load and fire requirements in our area now demand much stronger posts and beams than just a few years ago.
Too much snow on an older deck led to dramatic collapse in about 1 second.
We often see deck framing that appears OK on the exposed surfaces, but find severe degradation in the covered areas.
